Life has returned back to normal...
Life has returned back to normal for me at work. The last few months have been intense with our Dreamforce event (http://dreamforce.com). In fact it feels weird not getting home and opening up the laptop. Now what I need to do is fill that time with a workout routine. I was a good boy this week but time determines a routine.
This weekend is Jodi's birthday and we are going to Calistoga on Saturday so she can get a special massage at Indian Springs. While she does that I'll go float in their Olympic size hot spring pool. I typically like to sample a little wine before hand, grab a floatie and zone out for an hour pretending like I'm swimming in my mansion pool. It's a nice break from reality.
-----------------------------------
I wrote the above yesterday and never posted it. I just got out of the pool and it was soooooo nice. Off to sample a few wines before meeting Jodi's parents for Jodi's birthday dinner.

Thanksgiving and Central Coast Trip
Jodi and I wrapped up a busy two weeks with Thanksgiving in Northern CA, and our birthday getaway to the Central Coast. We put some serious miles on the family truckster and experienced some of the finer things California has to offer. Here are some pictures from our journey. Special thanks to Matt Bennetti (a co worker of mine) for driving up to Cambria from SLO to give us a tour of his Family Vineyard)

Happy Thanksgiving!
Time seems to be ticking by so fast! I am already almost at my third trimester. This week we did a lot of growing and it shows. The past weeks I've felt her start moving around and kicking. And she seems to have hiccups a lot!
I can't complain, pregnancy side effects have been mild. I have noticed though how I just crave desserts and chocolate, whereas I used to be able to restrain myself. This girl must like chocolate!
We are really excited for the holiday season!! We are taking off today up to my parents for a non-traditional Thanksgiving. We are going to a great italian restaurant near the coast with my parents and cousin and parents' friends. However, homemade dessert will not be overlooked. I am bringing my own cheesecake goodness!
On Sunday we will head down to San Luis Obispo for a relaxing three days. The trip is a reprieve from all the hard work Todd was up to last week at Dreamforce (his work's annual big conference). He was the star of the show in many respects and worked his tail feathers off. So we are headed for the slower life for a few days for his birthday. It's also probably the last time we will get away before the baby is born.
Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

Well I've just passed the first half mark of my pregnancy. Todd took this photo after my yoga class last week (21 weeks), I was very relaxed, so the tummy is as its full potential. I think I have finally "popped" as they say. People that help me at stores notice now that I'm pregnant. =)
Last weekend TJ and I took our first baby class. It was great information for me, as I have zero experience with little ones. The laboring seems scary to me right now, but its really thrilling at the same time.
Todd has been REALLY busy at work right now. He got home from work at midnight on Weds. night. Now is the time to do it! Not when the baby arrives.
He and I are so really happy right now. We can't wait to welcome baby Janzen into our home. Speaking of, we are having a total house day today. We will paint the baby's room, put in a new cat door, etc. I got the dresser from my mom yesterday that I will be refinishing and overhauling to use as the changing table. The crib and chair are on order! Everything is good!
We had an absolute

We're having a girl!
Jodi here. We found out yesterday... we are having a girl!! I am over the moon, as this is everything I wanted. A springtime baby girl. All the other tests came out very good and she is very healthy. Weighing in at 8 oz. already, they expect the due date to be around 3/13/09 still.
She looks very comfortable in there. Here's a couple pictures. On the right is the between the legs/bottom shot that reveals a big "space", nothin' but umbilical cord, which told the doctor she was a girl.
Todd is a little nervous I think to have a girl. But I think that "nobody loves a daddy like a little girl" and he will just melt when she's finally in his arms. I already promised him I would limit the amount of pink as much as possible. When he asked the color of the nursery, I replied "Not pink" so we agree on that much at least.

Arnold and the Presidents Cup
Here are some pictures from the Presidents cup golf tournament yesterday. My team built an application to showcase in the company suite so we got hooked up with some presidential passes. A very cool team outing and we saw some serious celebrities.
Here are some pictures from Arnold last weekend. We did a hike at 9K ft, and took a look at the progress of mom and dad's new house.

countdown until Oct. 12
Vic & Peg are really thrilled to be first-time grandparents too. My mom has already picked out the 'Pack and Play' and baby swing/jumper, etc. Looks like Todd and I will have some opportunity for some weekends away with such wonderful help all around.
The proud papa has already almost finished the addition of the beadboard to the second bedroom in preparation for the nursery. He claims that its a big project, but we really know its an excuse for him to use all his collection of power tools!

there is a baby!

This is my blog today, its Jodi here. I thought I would borrow Todd's space for awhile as I see a blog as the best to publish baby news. I prefer it to using Facebook as it seems a little more personal knowing that the librarian from my high school can't see my pictures. I mean, I know her ya, but I don't know if we are that close! Its also great that Todd has been posting here so friends and family know where they can find the update on what the Janzens' are up to!
I went to my 13 week ultrasound last week. Unfortunately, Todd couldn't slip away from work to be at the appointment. But I got some excellent picture souvenirs from the ultrasound posted here. I have to say how emotional it was for me to see for the first time it's little legs moving like crazy. This is the first time I think I have realized how real this little being is growing inside me. The picture finally resembles a baby and not just a peanut in a sack. I am truly blessed to have a healthy little ______(girl or boy) inside me. Fill in blank.
We are very excited to find

Summer Time Sights
Jodi and I have been enjoying the summer. For those who have not heard Jodi is officially 12 weeks pregnant this week. We are super excited. We have been laying a little low but surely not missing out on any fun. Last week we celebrated our 4th year wedding anniversary as well. To celebrate we did dinner and a movie....a rare things these days. We ate at SPQR in the Filmore (Roman Food) and saw "500 Days of Summer." A great date movie, unless you are about to break up with someone....if that's the case stay clear of this one.
Last weekend Kacie, Adam, and Taylor came to see us. We spent Friday night and Saturday morning together before heading up to Jodi's parents house. Taylor is about as perfect as they come. I fully expected to hear some serious crying through the night. One little peep which was quieter than the dishwasher was all we ever heard....amazing. Did I mention she looks like a little doll?
Below are pictures from the last two weekends. Click here for the larger slideshow.

Joe Moses and Gina's Wedding
Yesterday Jodi and I drove to Pasatiempo in Santa Cruz for Joe and Gina Moses's wedding. When we showed up I was handed a cool PBR and embraced in drunken hugs. I was not sure of the atire for the wedding so I wore a suit and tie. I should have known better. Most of the crew was in their best pair of Dickies/Ben Davis pants and a short sleave surf shirt. Everone with the exception of Mike Mass who brought out his always entertaining 3 piece 70's suit.
The wedding was at an amazing house, which I found out later belonged to Joes new wife. There were pranks and wise cracks through the whole cerremony. We were so far back (and thank god) the SC crew lost interest fast. There was the old pull the chair out before someone sits down trick and lot's of groping.
I could go on and on about all the details but I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. It was great seeing all the guys and it was a really fun, funny, and entertaining wedding.

Yesterday I took my team to a community service event at the Presidio in San Francisco. As part of our company policy each employee needs to give back 1% of their time to the community. I've been trying to plan 2 of these event a quarter because they make great team bonding events. Yesterday we we combed the cliffs of the old Battery bluffs. Here is what it looked like in 1890 during the Spanish American War.
Years after they turned this area into various landfills and at one point had a large incinerator on the cliff edge. After use as a landfill the Army pushed the large incinerator over the cliff where it lay until last year when the Precidio used a grant to have it removed. Why the people of San Francisco back then put landfills and cemetaries in some of the most scenic areas is beyond me. Todd, what are you talking about? Check out this podcast/website I am obsessed with lately, Sparkletack. This site is dedicated to revisiting the history of San Francisco and it will make your skin crawl at times.
Anyway, back to community service. We were supposed to be on the lookout for 4 plants on the cliffs, English Ivy, Cape Ivy, Iceplant, wild radish, and mustard. These are non native invasive species that wipe out native plants on the bluffs. Below are pictures from a great day out in the Presidio.

Sunday Cooking
Every Sunday Jodi and I cook a big meal to carry us through the first part of the week. Tonight we are staying true to summer. First we have a vegetable medley seasoned in lemon juice, garlic salt, pepper, fresh herbs and olive oil. I'll grill these in the pan you see behind the bowl. If you don't have one of these pans I highly recommend one. This particular model has a handle that you can remove. This is ideal for grilling in case you want to put the cover down. Second we have skinless, boneless chicken thighs. I like thighs because they are full of flavor and they don't dry out like breasts. Tonight I'm trying a new marinade. Lemon juice and zest, garlic, ground fresh Rosemary, minced sage, olive oil, sea salt, and pepper. Lastly we have fresh strawberries from the Burlingame farmers market.
I'm hoping the chicken turns out. I typically use a marinade that I learned from an old friend, it is bullet proof. In case you want it here it is.
- 1/2 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
- 1/4 cup oil
- 2-3 cloves garlic minced
- 1-2 tablespoons dried oregano
- Marinade for as little as 1 hour, max 1 day
I've found any marinade with soy sauce makes a great chicken marinade because it really penetrates the meat fast. Enjoy!

Uncles and the 4th of July
Jodi and I are up at Tahoe this weekend celebrating the 4th with my best friend Mike Allegri and his sister and brother in-law Niki and Matt. Between the two families there are 4 boys under 4 which makes for lots of excitement. For simplicity I'm uncle Todd, and it's kind of funny hearing the kids call me uncle Todd. Speaking of which Kacie send out some more pictures of my niece Taylor. I like the one below.Speaking of uncles, today would have been my uncle Bobs 63rd birthday. I love the 4th of July because it reminds me of him. Seeing all the flags and fireworks just adds to the memory. Last night we went down to Kings Beach to watch the fireworks with the kids. There were hundreds of boats on the lake and it was a great show, Tahoe is truly a beautiful place. Happy Birthday Bob, we miss you.

I feel like the summer calendar is filling up
Ok, let's air something right up front. I'm not a planner, in fact I am the anti planner. As a manager this is a bad quality so I am really trying to change it. Regardless, I feel like the weekends of our summer are slowly booking up. I don't know why but this leaves me with anxiety. For example, Kacie had a baby last weekend and nowhere did I plan to take a weekend off to go see her, Adam and the baby in Santa Barbara. So now that I've actually planned something for our summer weekends, I suddenly find myself wanting to flake on previous plans. I hate being a flake. And here lies the case and point of why I am not a planner. It's the whole notion of "what if something better comes up?" Now I know this mentality often leaves me at home doing nothing, but I like that too. This is where Jodi makes the perfect compliment. she is Polly planner, and let's face it, if she was not on the ball we wold not do a thing.
In other news I dropped the FJ40 off with my mechanic (I love saying that) to put on some new smog legal headers and flush all the fluids. I had a pretty bad exhaust leak that was making it difficult to drive with the windows up....minor problem. I really hope to get it back by the 4th of July for Bob's birthday. Anyway, I feel nervous not having it in my garage so the sooner it's back in my custody the better.

Videos from Cabo
I wanted to backup and post these videos. The first two are of Pueblo Bonito Sunset. They give you a little better sense of how massive the place is. The sky pool is empty because there were not enough people there so they closed it. The last video is of our friend Jim & Mara Hart's home in La Playita. What is amazing about this video is that Jim bought that property 20 years ago (guessing). It had a small 2 room house on it with a palapa roof. Where that beutiful marina now stands, there was a jungle of dense baboo, trees, and bushes...it was THICK. It totally blows my mind that they built a marina in his back yard. What is even more amazing is that Jim called it. I thought he was crazy when he said "there are plans to build a marina here and it will come right up to my back yard."

Fleetwood Mac still has it
Jodi and I went and saw Fleetwood Mac last night in Oakland. The original members were there minus Christine McVie. They sounded amazing, Stevie Nicks sounded better than she ever has and Linsey Buckingham is beyond words on guitar. Instead of releasing an album this year they decided to just go on tour and play their hits. Every song they played had the entire crowd singing. Another cool part about the concert was that they introduced many songs by telling you how they wrote it and why. We found out theta Lindsey Buckingham grew up just south of Palo Alto and Stevie Nicks went to Menlo Atherton High School, not far from us. The highlight of the night for me was Buckinghams solo of Big Love (below).

Stuff white people like
The volleyball in the pool today reminded me of the website "stuffwhitepeoplelike." Yes we love water games, especially if there are free drinks involved. Jodi and I played 2 days ago after we were 20 drinks deep from our snorkle cruise turned party boat. I think we lost, which is a good thing because we did not need anymore drinks. Cloudy water and jellyfish changed the nature of the boat. It's normal to take body shots off your wife on a snorkle cruise right? Hey, we're just two 31 year old acting like we are on spring break 2009.
Today is our last day so we are soaking it up. Happy hour just hit so I'm putting down th iPhone.

Quick Update, Mexico, and Pergolas
It's been a while since my last post. Lately I have just wanted to disconnect on the weekends, avoid the laptop, turn off the phone, ignore the email and facebook. I guess it's a symptom of feeling on call all week, who's to say.
Last weekend I went over to Mike Allegri's house in Redwood City to help him with his pergola (trellis). He had done all the hard stuff like setting the 8"x8" posts in cement and getting the height right. By the end of the day we were able to get the spacing we wanted, get the backplate anchored to the house

Today we are headed to Napa to celebrate Mothers Day with Jodi's family. I bought a cool expanding kite yesterday at REI and I cant wait to test it out. It's made by the same company that make those crazy competition kites you see people flying in San Francisco. http://www.rei.com/product/784712. When packed up it sits completely flat and has the shape of an avocado. When you want to use it it quickly expands.
On Monday we are going to be going to Cabo San Lucas for a week. We cancelled our trip last Sunday, but on Monday when we learned that the swine flu was just like the normal flu we decided to re-book. We're thinking it should be pretty empty down there :-)

Keeping busy

Another project I just completed was the complete rebuild of Jodi's new companies website. She now works for an interior designer who specializes in landmark hotels. You can see the final site here: http://www.csaad.com/
They do amazing work and she is really enjoying herself. Not much else to report.

Landcruiser Inspection and Yard Madness
This weekend I met up with Terry who is also the owner of a yellow FJ40. He works with Mike Allegri at Cupertino Electric. He has a 1975, and mine is a 1976 so there are a lot of similarities between the two. We chatted for an hour or two and then headed down to Campbell to meet his mechanic. We spent a 3-4 hours checking various things from engine to exhaust. Through some research we found a smog legal header that could replace my badly cracked exhaust manifold. That seems to be the next big project.
Sunday I woke up with little direction on what I wanted to do with my day. At 10AM I heard the vent on the top of my chimney squealing from the wind so I decided to put up the ladder and fix it. Once fixed I noticed my gutters were full of leaves. After I cleaned those I saw that a tree next to the house needed to be trimmed. After that I looked down at my lawn and noticed it need a trim. After the trim I noticed how much dirt was showing in the corners. After tearing up the soil I realized that I needed lawn seed, and while I was at it I should fertilize. After that I thought it made sense to move some dirt around. After that I realized all my tree trimmings needed to be broken down and put in recycling. In the process of doing that I realized I nuked part of my neighbors side yard with roundup a few weeks back so I decided to clean that up and trim his yard. After that it looked like a hurricane swept through my yard so I busted out the blower, which I take great pleasure in using. On top of that I pumped the brown water out of my pond-in-progress, and repainted the front door.
So here I am Monday morning sore as $&^@ and wishing I had one more day off.

Whistler Day 2
We had an awesome day of skiing. The flurries started around 11 but they were light and added a nice layer of soft snow. We were all over the mountain today, we covered both Whistler and Blackcomb. We stopped about 1 for a bite to eat and a beer. So far the food has been unreal. There are so many people from so many countries working up here it makes sense. Jodi had an awesome day and really improved with the good conditions. I think she finally understands why people love this sport. We just got back from the hot tub and our legs are jello. We're expecting more snow tonight so tomorrow should be epic.

Whistler update
The flight and 2.5 hour drive to Whistler was easy. Some of the sights along the way were amazing. We feel like we are on top of the world. Below are some pictures from the day. They are not exciting but I'm excited to be here. So far I have not met a single American.

We're off to Whistler
This year I failed to make my companies annual Peak Performers club trip to Hawaii. I'd be lying if I said I was not disappointed but I work with an amazing group of people and the competition was fierce. So although Jodi was probably really wishing for some time on Maui this year courtesy of the company I had another idea. SKI TRIP! That's right, we're going to where the temperature right now is 17 degrees and the snow blankets glaciers for as far as the eye can see. Thankfully for Jodi we are doing it right at the Westin in the Village where she can take advantage of the spa and I can get on a gondola out the front door. We're leaving tomorrow at 8 AM and I cant wait. I'll be bringing my laptop so stay tuned for updates

Sunday Ritual
Jodi and I rode to Woodside again on Sunday. We decided to bring the FJ for added fun. I know we are in a drought but the warm sunny day was awesome. We love Woodside bakery for breakfast. Jodi orders the raspberry chocolate chip pancake and I get the ham and asparagus frittata.
Take me to Paradise
One of my employees sent me this cool video by a guy who uses an interesting style of photography. It's called Tilt-Shift and it makes everything appear in miniature. It made me want to go to the beach. By the way, who goes to the beach to hula-hoop? Put on the headphones if you have them.

Chestnut Street and our old Hood
One last post for the day....the SF Chronicle posted an article about Chestnut St. in North Beach this morning. All of the places mentioned were 1-3 blocks from where we used to live....ahh the memories,
Cha-Chico
Jodi and I are headed to Chico today to see Becca and Chris. It's Becca's birthday and they are moving to Sacramento soon so call it a happy birthday/farewell Chico trip. On a funnier note Jodi and I started watching re-runs of the Family Guy recently. People have been telling me about this show for years but never sat down and watched an episode. This is some serious laugh out loud adult humor. If you thought the Simpson's had some clever adult humor the Family Guy takes it to another level. This short clip reminded my of the flu that was going around over the holidays. Although the flu is not funny, the part of this video where Peter (the dad) is holding the dogs ears back is pee your pants funny. Enjoy!

Double Bluetooth disaster, and yes that's plywood on my door
I saw a first on Bart today, some dude had 2 Bluetooth headsets on. Maybe one was a headphone for music but i made me think, "That was just a matter of time." One was probably filled with sour candy of which he picked it up from the checkout line at Target. I also saw the worst comb over ever on a Chinese guy. Think of where a woman would wear a bun on the back of her head and comb in all directions from there. my favorite part was the hair that was combed up and over the ears to make fake sideburns.
On the home front we have the latest in home décor accenting the front door...plywood. We are in the process of getting a new front door which has been a special experience. If you are looking for hours of confrontational conversation with your significant other get a new front door. If you are reading this and are thinking " we should get a new front door," ask yourself if that need is worth $3k! Now that I have your attention you can imagine that this project has turned me into a cranky 2 year old baby complete with attitude and fits. Naturally the man in me needed to find
a way to chop the cost. Jodi did a good job of ordering the door wholesale, easy peasy. Next you have to get the door milled to match the existing shape of your doorway. That's easy too if your opening is square. The following has been taken out of context and paraphrased for brevity and drama.
Door Installer # 1: Your house was built in 1912 and your opening is not
square?
TJ: "yes"
Door Installer # 1: " I don't like your front steps, I'll hang it and do
the locks for $1,000."
TJ: "WHAT!"

Long story short we're going to get this door project completed for a lot less, but at the cost of a lot of stress.
Here is what i learned and my overall advise on trying to do anything complex that is not your day job. Don't be concerned about getting a deal or saving money, hire someone you trust and be done with it. Trust is the key word here.

Obama heard me...
So in my previous post I wrote how the Obama campaign is using our technology for their Citizens Briefing Book. When I was browsing through the ideas I saw an Idea for "Encouraging trade Schools." This issue is near and dear to my father in-law Vic so I voted for it and added a comment. See it here. (disregard the extra "has" in my comment). Well it turns out that is is one of the most popular ideas in the Education category, I got a response from the Obama Transition team, and they addressed the topic in the YouTube video below. It's a start Vic!

Salesforce in the News
We had a really cool press release today. The Obama-Biden transition team is using our "Ideas" product to collect and gauge what issues matter most to the American public. Pretty cool stuff. If you have read the book "The Wisdom of Crowds" this will make a lot of sense.
"Salesforce CRM Ideas is being used on the Change.gov Web site to gather input from the American people as part of the effort to foster greater collaboration with citizens and a more transparent government. The application is now live at http://citizensbriefingbook.change.gov."
Here is a news article about it: http://blogs.zdnet.com/crm/?p=115

Quick Re-Cap of What is going on at the Janzen House
- Fitness = Up: I'm going to punish myself this month for the past year of slacking. Me writing this is holding me to it. Jodi is on a subtler approach.
- Cooking = Healthy and Good: I take advantage of Sundays to make most of the meals for the week. We also got a new crockpot and it rocks. Just made the best split pea soup ever and it was so simple. Chx stock, peas, celery, carrots, onion, Ham hock....thats it.
- Work = SSDD: Same $#!& Different Day
- Money = Outbound: Property taxes, Christmas bills, Insurance, DVM registration, Car Repair, and a new front door is killing me right now
- Cats = Diet: Mandy is taking comfort crunchies to a new level. She's on diet crunchies and not happy. Last Friday she ate a hole in the side of the bag to get more. Nothing some Duct tape couldn't fix. I love Duct tape!
- FJ40 = Smoged: I can't believe she passes smog. She also got an Oil change. I'm hoping to register it in another county this year so I no longer have to smog it. Then I can have fun with the motor.
